Chess Club

In his 2012 New York Times Bestseller, How Children Succeed, Paul Tough writes, “Two of the most important executive functions are cognitive flexibility and cognitive self-control. Cognitive flexibility is the ability to see alternative solutions to problems… [and] cognitive self-control is the ability to inhibit an instinctive or habitual response.” Both of those skills are essential in chess. He goes on to cite an accomplished chess coach who said, “Teaching chess is really about teaching the habits that go along with thinking.”
